Getting Started with Micropiles

Since 2015, Mascore has built deep expertise in residential, commercial, and industrial foundation systems. Our growing micropile capabilities serve a diverse range of clients across Ontario — from engineers and general contractors to municipalities and Fortune 500 companies. Our background in geotechnical engineering and soil analysis equips us to provide you with a solid foundation to build upon.

Micropiles in Ontario

Understand the Technology

Unlike most other deep foundation systems, micropiles can be installed in virtually any ground condition and in severely restricted-access locations — including low-headroom areas, near existing structures, and on steep slopes. They are drilled and pressure-grouted into place, forming a high-capacity reinforced element capable of transferring structural loads to competent soil or bedrock.

What is a Micropile?

Micropiles (also called mini piles or pin piles) are small-diameter, drilled deep foundation elements typically less than 300mm in diameter. They consist of a high-strength steel casing or reinforcing bar installed into the ground and bonded with cement grout.

Unlike helical piles, micropiles do not use helix plates. Instead, they are designed to perform in challenging soil conditions, tight access areas, or locations where vibration must be minimized.

Micropiles are commonly used for underpinning, structural support, and new construction where conventional foundation systems are not practical. Their design is tailored to site conditions, load requirements, and long-term performance expectations.

How Do Micropiles Work?

Micropiles are installed by drilling a small-diameter hole into the ground using specialized equipment. A steel casing or reinforcing bar is advanced to the required depth through soil, fill, or rock, depending on site conditions.

Once the required depth is reached, high-strength cement grout is pressure-injected to fill the space around the steel element. This creates a strong bond between the micropile and the surrounding ground.

Structural loads are transferred from the building into the micropile and then into the ground primarily through skin friction along the grout-to-soil or grout-to-rock interface. In suitable conditions, end bearing at the tip can also contribute to load capacity.

Because they are drilled and grouted, micropiles can be installed vertically or at an angle and are well-suited for restricted-access sites, low-headroom environments, and projects with complex ground conditions.

Benefits of Using Micropiles

Cost-effective solution for complex or restricted-access foundation projects
High load capacity relative to a small diameter design
Load capacity verified through field testing and engineering validation
Ideal for underpinning and strengthening existing structures
Low vibration and minimal noise during installation
Performs in difficult ground conditions, including rock, fill, and high groundwater
Suitable for installation below the water table
Compact equipment allows installation in tight or low-headroom areas
Can be installed at vertical or angled orientations for complex loading conditions
Reduced site disruption with minimal excavation required
Installable year-round with proper cold-weather procedures
Compatible with sensitive sites and existing infrastructure
Grouted system provides corrosion protection and long-term durability
Adaptable design to meet specific geotechnical and structural requirements
No vibration risk to adjacent structures
Effective for both compression and tension loads

Choose Micropiles for Your Next Project

Mascore micropiles provide engineered, high-capacity foundation solutions for a wide range of demanding applications. From foundation repair and underpinning to new construction on challenging ground, our micropiles deliver reliable results where other systems can’t.

Benefits of using Helical Piles

Helical piles are cost effective when compared to other systems
High loading capacities. A single pile can support up to 100 tons
Capacity is determined during installation
Eliminate concrete curing time and formwork
No mess. No spoil produced during installation
Can be installed when unstable and caving/sloughing soil conditions are present
Reduces amount of truck trips to and from a job site
Well understood by local governments and is compliant with building code regulations
Can be installed in high water table situations
Small installation equipment allows helical piles to be installed in areas with limited access
Can be installed all year around in all weather conditions
Resistant to frost heave
Fast installation compared to other systems. A foundation of 20 piles can be installed in 1 day
Quiet and vibration free installation
Galvanization used to combat corrosive soil condition to extend a structure’s service life
Minimizes disturbance in environmentally sensitive areas
