Decoding Helical Piles

Helical piles, sometimes referred to as helical piers, helical anchors, or posts, are screw-in piles used for constructing deep foundation systems and ground anchoring systems. A helical pile consists of a central shaft (circular or square) and one or more helix plates. These helix plates are press-formed with a specific pitch to resemble a screw and are welded to the shaft. Helical piles are available in various sizes and configurations to meet different loading and logistical needs. The size and configuration of a helical pile are determined by factors such as design load, soil conditions, soil corrosiveness, and the structure's service life.

Helical Pile Functionality

The load is transferred from the shaft to the helix plate(s) as the helical pile is driven below grade into the most favorable soil conditions. A high-torque/low-speed hydraulic drive motor, which can be attached to diverse types of equipment like excavators and skid steers, "screws" the helical pile into the ground. Helical piles are not impacted by high water tables or caving soil conditions.
